![]() Sometimes you have to go up really high to understand how small you really are.” Occurring between 09:30 and 12:17 local time (MDT), the mission (which ended with Baumgartner’s 4:19-long freefall featuring a peak speed of 1342km/h before deploying a parachute) broke three major international records – with Baumgartner now marked as the man who made the highest-ever jump from a platform, the longest distance for a freefall (36.5km), and the first person to ‘intentionally’ break the sound barrier (‘supersonic speed’) without the aid of a vehicle or an engine.Ī slightly less headline-making feat, meanwhile, was the viewing figures for the jump, which was streamed live (with 20 second delay) on YouTube by project sponsors Red Bull, with the footage seeing as many as 8 million views occurring simultaneously.Ī YouTube blog post recognised this achievement, writing: “We congratulate Felix Baumgartner and the entire Red Bull Stratos team for their successful mission, and for creating a livestream with the most concurrent views ever on YouTube.”Ĥ2-year-old Baumgartner, meanwhile, used his post-event press conference to clarify his message to the world shortly before jumping, confirming that he issued the words: “I know the whole world is watching right now and I wish the world could see what I can see. The ‘space jump’, saw Baumgartner (a BASE jumper nicknamed ‘Fearless Felix’) leap from 39km (24.3 miles, 128,000 ft) in the air after being sent up to the height from a purpose-built helium balloon launched from Roswell (USA), landing on his feet to complete a successful mission. He also clarified the words he spoke right before the jump as, “Sometimes you have to go up really high to understand how small you are.Yesterday saw the historic event of the first occasion of a human to physically break the sound barrier, with Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner’s record-breaking jump from space also breaking records on YouTube, as millions tuned in live to watch the ‘Red Bull Stratos’ event. This preliminary data will be submitted to international bodies for certification before an official world record statement is made.īaumgartner thanked his team and said that standing atop the world humbled him and that his main aim was to come back alive. The maximum speed achieved by Baumgartner’s body during the jump was 373m/s, which equates to 833.9mph or Mach 1.24 – greater than the speed of sound. ![]() The distance travelled during the freefall was 36,529m (119,846 feet) and it lasted four minutes and 20 seconds. UPDATE: The official figures from Brian Nutley of the National Aeronautics Association in the US put the exit altitude (the height that Baumgartner jumped from) at 39,045m (128,100 feet). The team are currently awaiting official confirmation of securing three world records and a press conference is due to take place online later today. The launch and freefall were the result of five years of planning from the Red Bull Stratos project and could provide useful scientific data for research into aerospace safety. Austrian skydiver and BASE jumper Felix Baumgartner has completed a freefall of more than 39,000 metres (128,000 feet) and potentially broken three world records in the process. ![]() ![]() ![]() Skin is in fact slightly translucent this subtle but crucial effect gives skin its soft appearance and is absolutely vital for realistic rendering, as shown in Figure 14-2b.įor most materials, the reflectance of light is usually separated into two components that are handled independently: (1) surface reflectance, typically approximated with a simple specular calculation and (2) subsurface scattering, typically approximated with a simple diffuse calculation. What's missing? The difficulties arise mainly due to subsurface scattering, the process whereby light goes beneath the skin surface, scatters and gets partially absorbed, and then exits somewhere else. ![]() However, naively rendering the resulting model gives an unrealistic, hard, dry-looking appearance, as you can see in Figure 14-2a. Fortunately, modern 3D scanning technology allows us to capture even this extreme level of detail. A realistic model of skin must include wrinkles, pores, freckles, hair follicles, scars, and so on. The sheer amount of detail in human skin presents one barrier. Skin has always been difficult to render: it has many subtle visual characteristics, and human viewers are acutely sensitive to the appearance of skin in general and faces in particular. Such physically based models provide flexibility by supporting realistic rendering across different lighting scenarios and requiring the least amount of tweaking to get great results.įigure 14-1 Real-Time Rendering of Realistic Human Skin 14.1 The Appearance of Skin Our goal throughout is to employ the most physically accurate models available that exhibit a tractable real-time implementation. Tantō ( 短刀, "short blade"): A sword with a blade shorter than 30 cm.The name derives from the way the sword would be stuck at one's side through the obi (sash/belt). Generally it is the short blade that accompanies a katana in the traditional samurai daisho pairing of swords, but may be worn by classes other than the samurai as a single blade, also worn edge up as the katana. Wakizashi ( 脇差, "side inserted "): A general term for a sword between one and two shaku long (30 cm and 60 cm in modern measurement), predominantly made after 1600.It was developed from sasuga, a kind of tantō, around the 14th century, and became the mainstream replacing tachi from the 15th century. Katana ( 刀, "sword"): A sword with a curved blade longer than 60 cm (there is no upper length limit but generally they are shorter than 90 cm), worn with the edge upwards in the sash. The name refers to the length of the handle wrapping. Nagamaki ( 長巻, "long wrapping"): A sword with an exceptionally long handle, usually about as long as the blade.Ōdachi ( 大太刀, "big Tachi")/ Nodachi ( 野太刀, "field Tachi"): Very large tachi, some in excess of 90 cm, and usually a blade of the late 14th century.Kodachi ( 小太刀, "small Tachi"): A shorter version of the tachi, but with similar mounts and intended use, mostly found in the 13th century or earlier. The tachi was in vogue before the 15th century. Tachi were worn suspended, with the edge downward. Tachi ( 太刀, "long sword"): A sword that is generally longer and more curved than the later katana, with curvature often centered from the middle or towards the tang, and often including the tang.Since the 10th century, they disappeared as weapons and came to be made only as offerings to Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. When the mounts are taken out of the equation, a tanto and wakizashi will be determined by length under or over 30 cm, unless their intended use can be absolutely determined or the speaker is rendering an opinion on the intended use of the blade. A long tanto may be classified as a wakizashi due to its length being over 30 cm, however it may have originally been mounted and used as a tanto making the length distinction somewhat arbitrary but necessary when referring to unmounted short blades. It is properly distinguished, then, by the style of mount it currently inhabits. An unsigned and shortened blade that was once made and intended for use as a tachi may be alternately mounted in tachi koshirae and katana koshirae. ![]() The type classifications for Japanese swords indicate the combination of a blade and its mounts as this, then, determines the style of use of the blade. Western historians have said that Japanese katana were among the finest cutting weapons in world military history, for their intended use.
